What is a polysomnogram?
A polysomnogram is a
procedure that measures
neurological body functions
during sleep. Each study
consists of applying sensors
on several different parts
of the body.
Measurements will be
taken from:
|
Brain Waves:
|
Sensors placed on
the scalp. |
|
Heart Beats:
|
Sensors placed on
the chest. |
|
Eye Movements:
|
Sensors placed above
and below each eye. |
|
Muscle Tension:
|
Sensors placed on
and under the jaw. |
|
Leg Movements:
|
Sensors placed on
the lower leg. |
|
Airflow breathing:
|
Sensors placed
underneath the nose
and on upper lip. |
|
Chest & Abdominal
Breathing: |
Elastic sensors
wrapped around the
chest and abdomen on
the outside of
clothing. |
How can I sleep with all
these wires on me?
Surprisingly, most people
sleep reasonably well with
sensors attached. We are
only looking to obtain a
sample of your sleep. The
body sensors are applied in
such a manner that you can
turn and move during sleep.
None of the sensors break
through the surface of the
skin. The entire procedure
is completely painless. Our
staff will make your stay as
comfortable as possible.
Will the sensor devices
hurt?
No, the sensors will not
cause you any pain. However,
sometimes the skin may
become slightly irritated
due to contact with our
preparation materials such
as tape. You may also feel a
sensation of warmth where
the oxygen sensor measuring
device makes contact with
your finger. These items
should not cause discomfort.
Will I be given anything to
help me fall asleep?
We prefer, to the extent
medically possible, that you
be off all sleeping
medications for at least one
week before your sleep
study. It is also important
not to consume any alcohol
or caffeinated beverages on
the day of your test.
- Please do not stop any
medications without
consulting with your
physician.
- Please shower (body and
hair) immediately prior to
coming to the sleep center.
- Do NOT wear ANY makeup,
perfume, cologne, lotions,
creams, moisturizers,
hairspray, gels or mouse.
Hair soap and conditioners
must be well rinsed out.
- Please remove all
artificial hair enhancements
prior to sleep center visit.
What should I bring?
- You must bring a photo ID,
such as your driver’s
license and your insurance
card.
- All sleep center paperwork
given to you must be
completed and brought to the
sleep center on the night of
your study.
- A two piece pajama set is
most convenient for both the
patient and your technician.
- Change of clothes if you
desire.
- Bring your normal daily
medications as the sleep
center does not maintain
any.
- Your own pillow if you
like, however we do provide
two pillows.
- Please make sure you have
eaten a normal dinner prior
to arriving at the lab. If
you are diabetic, you may
bring a small light snack
with you.
- Do not consume or bring
any ALCOHOL or CAFFEINE on
the day of the study.
- All cellular phones must
be turned off after 10 pm.
- Please note that there
will NOT be any shower
facilities available.
